In Iowa more, than 3.3 million acres of corn and soybean fields have been washed out. With 16% of the state’s farmland under water, it is safe to estimate the total cost of the damage will at least match the cost of the flooding in 1993, fifteen to twenty-billion dollars. Check out more at U.S. and World Report. Part of that financial damage will affect all of us, with global flooding diminishing crop returns earlier this year, our domestic harvest was more important than ever. In 2007 the food inflation rate was at 2.1%. It is now 6.7%. For a great explanation of this, read this article by Jennifer Openshaw with Market Watch.

The worst of it seems to be over, but now the Midwest is left to wait weeks for the water to recede in many

“Although no single weather event can be attributed to global warming, it’s critical to understand that a warming climate is supplying the very conditions that fuel these kinds of weather events: it is a law of physics that warmer air is able to carry more water.” – Larry Schweiger, President & CEO, National Wildlife Federation, On Global Warming and the Catastrophic Flooding in the Central U.S.

It is a little odd that the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is only reporting a total acreage burned of 104,821… I’ll keep an eye on official versus independent reports concerning this.
Interested in how fires in California can effect people NOT actually in California? Sign On San Diego reports that in Reno, Nevada they have issued a Stage One Alert due to the unhealthy air from the fires, with visibility reduced to as low as three miles. It is also suggested Las Vegas could be covered in thick haze, but the effect on air quality would be negligible. Credit to the Associated Press as well.

June 25, 2008, 1:09 am (Original Post)

It took less than twenty-four hours for an electrical storm to let loose eight-thousand lightning strikes, starting more than 800 wildfires across Northern California. Check out the AP report, with contributions by Alicia Chang.

“You’re looking at a pattern that’s climatological rare. We typically don’t see this happen at this time of summer, to see 8,000, that’s way up there on the scale.” – John Juskie, Science Officer with the National Weather Service in Sacramento

One problem is that the storm brought lots of lightning, but the rain that came along “evaporated in hot, dry

layers of the atmosphere before it hit the ground,” said Juskie. Is there a connection between a storm like this and Global Warming? Let us look into that…

On August 31st, 2007, NASA Scientists created a new climate model (article is from Science Daily), the indications were that violent severe storms and tornadoes may become a more common occurence as the climate warms. Lighting produced in storms often ignites

wildfires in dry or drought stricken areas. Findings lead researchers to predict that some regions (California?) would have less humidity in the air, and be more prone to wildfires as a result. It makes sense to think that with drier conditions, there will be fewer storms… but is that a good thing?

“These findings may seem to imply that fewer storms in the future will be good news for disastrous western U.S. wildfires, But drier conditions near the ground combined with higher lightning flash rates per storm may end up intensifying wildfire damage instead.” – Tony Del Genio, lead author of the study and a scientist at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, New York.

Before you start to panic though, let me explain the Mayan Long Count Calender. It identifies dates by counting forward from August 11, 3114 BCE in the Gregorian calendar or September 6 in the Julian Calender.

The following table shows the period equivalents as well as Mayan names for these periods:

Days Long Count period Long Count period Approx solar years
20                                                                                                                                                  = 20 K’in                                                  = 1 Winal                                                                                                                                                                                                                         1/18th
360                                                                                                                                  = 18 Winal                                             = 1 Tun                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              1
144,000                                                                          = 20 K’atun                                          = 1 B’ak’tun                                                                                                                     395

Now according to the Popol Vuh, a book of creation accounts from the Maya, we live in the fourth world (where man was placed), the three previous worlds having been failures. In the Mayan Long Count the previous ‘world’ ended at the start of the 13th B’ak’tun (which we are currently in). This would mean the 14th B’ak’tun will start the day (December 20, 2012) after the end of the 13th B’ak’tun (December 21, 2012).

Based on that information, several theories have arisen as to what will happen in December… everything from Magnetic Pole Reversal to Galactic Alignment (popularized by John Major Jenkins, and a core component of a lot of New Age philosphy), most theories following an ‘End of Days’ theme.

To start off, yes the poles are weakening, but will they collapse and reverse by 2012? No. I will refer to an article titled;

The article can be found at the American Geophysical Union website. Hoffman’s best guess on a timeframe for a pole reversal? Two-thousand years, not the less than four years between now and 2012!

But what about the Galactic Alignment? What could that do? The short and sweet answer is NOTHING, or at

least whatever it could do has already been done! The Galactic Alignment is an astronomical phenomenon

that refers to an alignment between the December solstice sun with the equator of our galaxy, the Milky Way. The precise alignment of the solstice point (the precise center-point of the body of the sun as viewed from earth) with the Galactic equator was calculated to occur in 1998 (Jean Meeus, Mathematical Astronomy Morsels, 1997). That means just what I said, the event has happened before and will happen again, and we’ve already experienced whatever effects it could have on us.

So if you wan’t my opinion on the Mayan Long Count, I’ll just say the gears of the Doomsday Clock aren’t responding to this sort of…. “news”.

In 1988 Senator Al Gore and Senator Tim Wirth organized a Senate Hearing to allow testimony from James Hansen, he proceeded to inform them (during a heatwave) that Global Warming was already here. In Hansen’s words at that time… “Number one, the earth is warmer in 1988 than at any time in the history of instrumental measurements. Number two, the global warming is now large enough that we can ascribe, with a high degree of confidence, a cause-and-effect relationship to the greenhouse effect.”

Precisely twenty years after his first warning, he has come back to say that the world has now long passed the “dangerous level” of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and at this point in time our atmosphere can only remain this way for a few more decades without changes such as mass extinction, sea level rises, and ecosystem collapse.

“We’re toast if we don’t get on a very different path” – James Hansen

So what does Hansen think about our chances of turning things around? The answer: We can still stop the worst, but we don’t have much time. Already we’re seeing the signs, within five to ten years the Arctic will be free of sea ice in the summer, just as predicted.

“Dr. Hansen was right. Twenty years later, we recognize him as a climate prophet.” – Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., committee chairman

I’d like to start off with a couple lines from the ‘Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists‘, but before I do that let me say this site is in no way affiliated with the BAS or the Doomsday Clock, and all material from them is copyrighted to their respective creators. It has been created strictly to inform and increase awareness of this troubling subject.

“The Doomsday Clock conveys how close humanity is to catastrophic destruction–the figurative midnight–and monitors the means humankind could use to obliterate itself. First and foremost, these include nuclear weapons, but they also encompass climate-changing technologies and new developments in the life sciences that could inflict irrevocable harm.”

The BAS describes a breakdown, a total amount of forces pushing the clock closer towards midnight. As stated in the previous quote, there are three primary factors baring down on humanity. The Nuclear, Climate Change, and Bio-security. Think of these as the gears in this Doomsday Clock…

Example:

We assign one gear the job of providing movement to the clock based on the nuclear factor, and in 1991 a new nuclear arms treaty was signed and sends our gear into action! The treaty had the implied result of less danger and a lower chance of nuclear war, therefore the ‘nuclear gear’ pushes the clock all the way back to seventeen minutes to midnight, from a previous time of three minutes to midnight in 1984! Now, that is a very simplified analogy… Imagine all three gears (nuclear, climate, and bio) working together, a new treaty may lower the risk of nuclear war, but at the same time the effects of climate change could be having the opposite effect on the clock due to global warming, but to a higher degree, pushing the clock closer to midnight despite the positive effects of the treaty.

A little history about the clock…

Doomsday clock first established in 1947

Chicago BAS offices keep a version of the piece

The first time it was set to seven minutes to midnight; 18 changes since then

Originally primarily concerned with nuclear annihilation, now considers several other threats as well

This site is intended to be a depository of relevant information and news stories concerning the Doomsday Clock. It will be updated regularly with possible signs and warnings coming from all over the world. This is not meant to scare, just to inform.

We are currently five minutes to midnight.
